Food Distribution

Our Mission

Yayasan Kechara Indonesia (YKI) or the Kechara Foundation Indonesia – Food Distribution program is our of our main  ongoing initiatives.

The foundation of YKI was inspired by His Eminence the 25th Tsem Tulku Rinpoche who continues to be the spiritual guide of YKI. In his youth Tsem Rinpoche often experienced hunger after at the age of 15 deciding to run away from home where he had experienced physical and emotional abuse.  Subsequently, he journeyed across the US, from New Jersey to Los Angeles, during which shivering from the cold or being alone and penniless was a frequent occurrence. Because of this, Rinpoche always remembers those in need and encourages others to do them a good turn.

Our activities in Indonesia started in November 2010 when a personal initiative by YKI’s founder, Valentina Suhendra, saw the distribution of 18 packets of food.

What started as a personal endeavor gained such support that, with our increased capacity, we decided to formalize our activities in the form of a legal foundation under Indonesian Law on 15 June 2012.

At present, we distribute between 290-400 packets of cooked food in areas such as Petamburan, Cipete and Kota Bambu Utara in Jakarta. For the elderly of Kota Bambu Utara, we also distribute supplementary nutrition packets, in addition to the government benefits they already receive from the government.

Apart from food packets, we also give out packets of essential daily goods to areas such as Kota Bambu Selatan, Kemanggisan, Palmerah, Cipete and Pertamburan.

Our food packets consist of vegetarian fares, which everyone can eat and are definitely healthy. We perform quality checks on these by opening and tasting a random packet after delivery by our supplier.

Food distribution is not meant to promote idleness among our recipients or encourage their dependence on us. Rather, the scheme serves as an icebreaker and token of friendship between members of the community and ourselves, so that we can find out more about their other urgent needs. This undoubtedly helps us formulate follow-up programs and identify new students or elderly citizens who may require our help under other schemes.
